Project-Based Learning for Elementary Classrooms, Part 2

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Please note: This session is intended for those who already participated in Part 1.

Before teaching at a charter school devoted to project-based learning, I spent three years creating and implementing projects with my second and third grade students in a district school. During that time, students published a book on Amazon, produced an activity book to distribute at local businesses, and played an active role in their local school board election -- meeting candidates, registering voters, and knocking on doors. With each project, I used a new framework combining practical aspects of my lived teaching experiences with the theories underlying popular approaches to PBL. This made for projects that fostered deeper learning, provided engagement, and promoted grade-level standards within our unique school context. Please join me for an extended two-hour workshop in which I discuss my system for planning and executing projects in contexts facing various constraints and share resources before coaching participants through a project planning process.

Learning Targets:

  • I can define project-based learning.

  • I can identify parts of a new framework for project-based learning.

  • I can identify how this new framework for project-based learning applies to classroom instruction.

  • I can use a graphic organizer to plan a project idea based on my classroom and school context.

  • I can share my project idea with my partners.
